Police chase, backpack grab, 6 am arrest

Police have charged a man with weapons offences following an incident in Dartmouth overnight.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., police responded to a report of a man with a rifle in a backpack in the 100 block of Wyse Road in Dartmouth. Upon arrival, officers located the man and he began to flee on foot. Officers pursued and were able to take hold of the backpack which contained a pellet rifle, but the suspect got away and was unable to be located at that time.

At approximately 6 a.m., police located the suspect and arrested him.   

Joshua Russell, 28, is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth provincial court today to face charges of:

  • Possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Possession of firearm contrary to order/fail to surrender (x2)
  • Failure to comply with conditions of release order (x4)
