Pictou County RCMP, Fire and EHS are responding to a two vehicle crash with injuries that occurred at approximately 12:15 p.m.
Pictou County RCMP are advising the Shore Road is now open to traffic in both directions.
The preliminary investigation into the cause of the crash continues. Police can confirm three persons were transported to hospital, one via Life-flight, the two others via ground ambulance.
Further investigation into this matter revealed that both vehicles were travelling West bound on Shore Road in the community of Merigomish. The lead vehicle was a Pontiac Grand AM being driven by a man in his early twenties and carrying a female passenger in her late teens. The second vehicle, a Mazda driven by a man in his early twenties, no other occupants, was approaching from behind and commenced to pass the lead vehicle in a legal passing zone. The passing vehicle met with on-coming traffic before completing his pass. Both vehicles drifted to the right-hand shoulder of Shore Road eventually ending up in the ditch. Both males were transported to local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The female was air-lifted to hospital in Halifax with serious injuries. Barney’s River and Merigomish Volunteer Fire Departments along with EHS and Life-flight assisted police at the scene.
