Premier Stephen McNeil was saddened to hear of the passing of renowned Cape Breton fiddler Hugh Allan “Buddy” MacMaster today, Aug. 21.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the MacMaster family during this difficult time,” said Premier McNeil.

“Buddy MacMaster brought Cape Breton music to the world and influenced a generation of Celtic musicians. His gift of music will live on for generations to come.”

Mr. MacMaster received numerous accolades and acclaim for his mastery of the island’s music. His concerts and recordings were enjoyed by Nova Scotians, Canadians, and audiences around the world.

In 2000, he received the Order of Canada for his contributions to Canadian culture. In 2003, Mr. MacMaster was appointed to the Order of Nova Scotia for his lasting musical legacy.

“I encourage all Nova Scotians to look back fondly on everything Mr. MacMaster has given us and continue to celebrate his music and wonderful life,” said Premier McNeil.
