Province Honours Veterans on Anniversary of Canadas Contribution to First Persian Gulf War

The Province of Nova Scotia today, Feb. 26, honoured Canadians who served in the Gulf War on the 25th anniversary of the liberation of Kuwait.

“The Government of Nova Scotia joins with the Canadian Armed Forces in marking the 25th Anniversary of the liberation of Kuwait,” said Deputy Premier Diana Whalen, on behalf of Premier Stephen McNeil, Minister responsible for Military Relations. “Canada stood proudly beside its international allies in the defence of freedom.”

Operation FRICTION was Canada’s military contribution to the Gulf War and more than 4,000 Canadians served in the Persian Gulf. The ships deployed to the conflict were prepared and departed from Canadian Forces Base Halifax.

“We honour those who served on behalf of their country and we recognize the men and women of the Canadian military who bravely protect Canadians, both at home and abroad,” said Ms. Whalen. “We offer them our heartfelt thanks and appreciation.”

Commemorative events marking Canada’s contribution are taking place at various Canadian Forces Base locations through February 29.
