RCMP charge driver under Smoke Free Places Act

On June 30, a member of Guysborough District RCMP doing traffic enforcement in Halfway Cove when he noted a speeding vehicle.

He stopped the car, and noticed the driver was smoking a cigar and had a 13-year-old passenger with him in the vehicle. When he was advised that it was against the law to smoke in a vehicle with a youth present, the driver was belligerent, refused to put out his cigar, and continued to smoke.

John Bernard Meagher of Guysborough was been charged with Section 5(2)(A) of the Smoke-Free Places Act. He was also charged for speeding.

In the Province of Nova Scotia, the Smoke-Free Places Act states that it is unlawful to smoke in any motor vehicle where a person under the age of 19 is present. It’s also unlawful to smoke in vehicles used in the course of employment while carrying two or more employees. The Act applies to all combustibles including tobacco, vape (“juice”), cannabis, and bans the use of e-cigarettes and waterpipes in indoor public places in Nova Scotia.
