RCMP – get vehicles ready for winter now!

With another Nova Scotian winter looming in the near future, the RCMP remind the motoring public to ensure their vehicle is ready for winter weather.

Snow and ice will put extra demands on your vehicle maintenance. Ensure your vehicle is ready for this Nova Scotia winter by considering the following winter maintenance tips:

-Have a mechanic check the car battery, charging system, ignition, brakes, lights and belts.

-Ensure you have sufficient engine antifreeze and windshield washer fluid that is rated a minimum of -40°C temperature range and keep an extra jug of each in your trunk.

-Make sure your windshield wipers are in good shape.

-Never let your gas tank go below half full.

-Ensure you have good winter tires on your vehicle. Check the manufacturer’s wear indicator mark on your tires and replace them if your tire has reached its wear limit. Worn tires will not provide proper grip in the snow. Regularly check tire pressure as it will deflate in cold weather.

Do not get caught in the first snow of the winter when your vehicle is not prepared.

Sgt. Brian Herrick of the RCMP Traffic Services says “numerous collisions are caused during the first snow fall because drivers do not adjust their driving habits and many vehicles are still equipped with summer tires. I recommend every driver ensure they adjust their driving habits and prepare their vehicle for winter well before the first snow.”

Remember road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
