Colchester District RCMP was involved in a situation today that led to the discharge of an RCMP officer’s firearm, resulting in the death of a man.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., RCMP members were investigating a complaint of a stolen vehicle from Cumberland County. Police were attempting to locate the vehicle, which had been spotted in Truro. One RCMP member was injured when they were struck by the suspect vehicle. The police officer fired their service pistol at the driver of the vehicle, resulting in the death of the man. The RCMP officer who was injured was taken to hospital by ambulance for what is believed to be serious but non life-threatening injuries. No one else was in the suspect vehicle. No other police officers or civilians were hurt during the incident.

Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased at this difficult time. Our thoughts and support are also with our injured member, his family and colleagues.

The RCMP would like to acknowledge the support and assistance provided by Truro Police Service during this investigation.

The investigation is ongoing. Colchester District RCMP has referred the matter the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT). The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) independently investigates all serious incidents which arise from the actions of police in Nova Scotia. There does not have to be an allegation of wrongdoing.

Given the matter is now being investigated by SiRT, the RCMP is unable to discuss further details about the shooting.
