RCMP offer safety tips for the Canada Day long weekend

Nova Scotia RCMP expects that the Canada Day weekend will be busy with people visiting the province and residents traveling to visit friends, festivals and events.

Motorists traveling Nova Scotia’s highways and roadways, heading to cottages, camp sites and beaches this weekend can expect to see RCMP officers conducting checkpoints across the province to help keep our roadways safe.

This long weekend is one of the busiest for holiday traffic. The increase in traffic can lead to the increased possibility of becoming involved in a collision if you aren’t careful or completely focused on your driving.

Here are a few things to keep in mind this long weekend:

– Watch for increased pedestrian traffic. The children are out of school and many adults are now on vacation.
– Plan a safe ride home or plan to stay – don’t drink and drive.
– Slow down, keep your distance and buckle up – make sure to arrive at your well deserved vacation destination safely.
– Don’t push your limits on, or in, the water – remember life jackets save lives and alcohol and water don’t mix.
– Do not leave valuables in your vehicle or unattended on the beach.
– Be responsible with your alcohol, both with consuming and transporting.
– Call 911 if you see an impaired driver.
