Recreation Facility Funding for Acadian Areas

Building new trails in Yarmouth County is one of several projects in Acadian areas to receive recreation facility funding to help Nova Scotians lead healthy, active lifestyles.

The grants were announced today, July 7, through the Recreation Facility Development Program.

“We are encouraging Nova Scotians to lead healthy lifestyles, so it’s important to support sport and recreation facilities where people can be physically active,” said Minister of Natural Resources Zach Churchill, on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister Leo Glavine. “With nearly $2 million for 67 projects across the province, Nova Scotians of all ages can get active and have fun using new and upgraded facilities like these trails.”

The Municipality of the District of Yarmouth is getting $48,000 to build connecting trails to the Yarmouth Rail Trail.

“Connecting the rail trail to our business park will open the trail to some 300 staff for wellness programs,” said Derek Sutherland, director of public works with the Municipality of the District of Yarmouth. “It will also give area residents a safe, secure area to access the multi-use trail system that stretches throughout the county and beyond.”

The Municipality of the District of Argyle is getting $54,000 to rebuild two tennis courts, and the Meteghan Park Development Association is getting $12,000 to build a skateboard park.

The grants help community groups, municipalities and other not-for-profit organizations develop facilities to increase public participation in sport and physical recreation. Examples include renovations to buildings, developing and maintaining walking trails, and building and upgrading fields for sport and recreation.

The grants support Thrive!, the province’s plan for a healthier Nova Scotia. The plan aims to create supportive environments for healthy eating and physical activity. Learn more at http://thrive.novascotia.ca .
