The RCMP would like to advise that the search for missing mountain biker, Marty Leger, will conclude this evening.

On Thursday, May 29th, Lower Sackville RCMP received a call of an overdue mountain biker in the Spider Lake area off Waverley Rd.

The 30-year-old male had gone biking but did not return home.

Over the last five days, approximately 450 Ground Search & Rescue (GSAR) volunteers from across the Maritimes, and Joint Task Force Atlantic personnel were tasked with covering a vast area in very challenging conditions. The terrain was dense, the temperatures high and some areas extremely treacherous for even the most experienced searchers.

Department of Natural Resources and RCMP helicopters, all-terrain vehicles, water craft, and Police Dog Services also provided assistance in the search. Unfortunately, there has been no sign of Mr. Leger.

‘The decision to end any search is extremely difficult,’ said C/Supt Roland Wells, Officer in Charge of Halifax RCMP. ‘I want to extend my heartfelt sympathy towards the Leger family in their time of grieving. I also want to extend sincere thanks to all of the volunteers who came out to assist us in this search. Your dedication, support and determination are an inspiration.’

The GSAR volunteers and Joint Task Force Atlantic personnel have been using specialized techniques, methodologies and experience gained from previous searches. After exhausting all efforts, Ground Search & Rescue volunteers completed their tasks this afternoon and Joint Task Force Atlantic will finish at 9 p.m. At that time, the search for Marty Leger will officially conclude.

The RCMP would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents of Spider Lake for their overwhelming support and for welcoming us into their homes and community.

As well, the RCMP would like to thank Joint Task Force Atlantic, especially the soldiers from Gagetown, Department of Natural Resources, Environment Canada, Nova Scotia Emergency Management Office, Aerial Thermal Imaging and the Cyclesmith Junior Racing Team for their support and assistance.

The RCMP are asking anyone traveling the trails of Spider Lake to please call the police if you come across anything out of place. No amount of information is too small or insignificant. This matter will now become a missing person case for the RCMP.
