24 hours of Gluttony

DonairHave I mentioned I went a month without booze?  I have? Ok, well have I mentioned I followed it up with a weekend of gluttony?  (actually is was more like 24 hrs of gluttony and maybe a little bit of debochery).

The weekend started off on a healthy and active note with some rock climbing as a final hoorah with the kids I coached on the hockey team this year.  I was really looking forward to it as it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and had never done and I was pretty sure I was really going to like it.  I was right. It was so much fun and really challenging both mentally and physically.  It was a great workout and a great team building activity with the kids.  Unfortunately, we followed it up with a pizza party but after 35 days of nothing but healthy food, it was welcomed! Oh GOD how I love pizza.  That combined with beer was the biggest contributor to me putting on 100lbs in the first place.  Side note: I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned this to you guys before but on a Friday night I use to order two large pizzas (from a different place each week to try them out) and eat one for supper that night and one for breakfast the next day.  I know, right!?

After that great workout and about 5 pieces of ‘za (Once I start, it’s hard to stop) I headed home to pour my first glass of wine in 35 days.  I was very excited about having my first glass of wine with my girlfriend because I stared my 35 days shortly after we started dating!  We had a glass from a nice bottle of 2005 Jean Bousquet, Malbec.  Then we had another.  And another.  We opened the bottle with plans of “A” glass each but that quickly turned in to two bottles… So good!

Saturday started early for me with a volleyball tournament in the morning; 10 sets of volleyball in 3 ½ hours, that’s a lot of volleyball, but lots of fun!  Although a lot of exercise on little sleep and some wine still in my system was hard it was still a great way to start the day.

Next was to go home and get ready for a road trip to Moncton, New Brunswick to play hockey with my a bunch of guys from my work and then a night out on the town…

For the drive down, I decided to pack a healthy lunch as I knew the rest of the day was going to be a loss and I assumed Sunday was going to be as well.  When I got to Moncton (my old stompin’ ground for a year while I went to college) I checked in to the hotel and met up with a few of the boys.  They already had chips, cookies and beers on the go and it was hard to say no to them at this point, but I did.  I figured I was going to try and at least get the hockey game over and done with before diving head first into what I now call “the 24 hours of gluttony”.  We chatted for a bit and then headed down to the rink.

After a great game of hockey, we were greeted in the dressing room with a few beers… and so it began!  After a quick shower and a few beers later we ordered a bunch of pizza for supper (two nights in a row, I know).  From there the night continued with more beer (I won’t disclose how much beer but I don’t call this the “24 hrs of gluttony” for nothin’) and more pizza before we hit the town.  We had a great night out and it was a late one and what better way to cap the night off after you’ve been drinking… PIZZA! Yup, three times in a row.  And when I say “pizza” I don’t mean just one or two slices.  Just remember what I said earlier about how much I LOVE pizza!

I woke up Sunday knowing I had to leave early and head back to Halifax to play volleyball but all I wanted to do was stay in bed and sleep.  After fighting with myself to get up, I met up with some of the boys and we went for a nice greasy breakfast.  3 fried eggs, bacon, ham and sausage and some toast with coffee!! Mmmmm… Greasy spoon breakfast always helps the next day!  Did I say always, I meant usually… Today was not one of those days.  I felt like garbage!

Once I got home I crawled into bed and slept for 2 hours before having to go to volleyball.  What did I eat before going? A bag of chips!

Volleyball was not pretty and I just wanted it to be over and for most of the 2 hours I was playing and was trying not to be sick while on the court.  Why did I do this to myself?  I had been feeling SO good for 35 days and had lost 8 lbs, why oh why did I drink like that and eat like crap the past 24 hours?  This is what I was missing?  Holy crap I’m stupid! (these were the thoughts going through my head at the time!).

After v’ball I headed home to curl up on the couch and watch some TV.  After about 5 mins, I realized I was hungry again and was craving something I haven’t had in a VERY long time… A donair!  Ohhhhh man… a greasy donair was the perfect thing to eat to top off this weekend of crap!  So I went on to the Greco website and found what they called the “Donair Deal”. 2 donairs and a 9” garlic fingers for $17… You’d think I would have shared this with the missus, but alas, I ate it all myself and I think I gained 15lbs but I loved it!!

Now jump to 3 days later where I’m feeling SO gross and still a hurting unit.  My body was sore but not from working out.  I was still exhausted. I felt gross and it actually ended up taking me about a week to fully recover from this mentally and physically.  Again, it makes me wonder, why do I do this to myself?

I went a few more weeks after this without drinking and was back to my old self and was feeling great.  I was training hard and eating well only to all to come unwound again this past weekend.  I’m now realizing that going out and “partying like I’m 20″ is slowly coming to an end for me.  I prefer getting up on Saturday and Sunday well rested and not hungover and being able to go for a run or to the gym or even to the market.  Waking up and being active and productive with Gina,  instead of feeling like crap in bed all day, is so much better than anything else.  I think this is going to continue for a while!
