6 Month Anniversary and Giveaway

When I started this site, I started it as a blog just to express my opinion and feelings about what I was going through while trying to get in shape.  The ups, the downs, the struggles and the victories.  Over the past few months I stopped using the word “blog” to describe my site. This is for no other reason than the fact that I’m not the sole contributor anymore and it’s not just me talking about my adventures in life. I do have a blog on my site and I love doing that part of it and I’ve been told by a few people it’s what draws them to the site, but I enjoy having professionals write for me and having other people’s voices giving their opinions and input instead of always just hearing me talk all the time.

I started YourInnerSkinny because while looking for my own inspiration to get my ass in gear and go to the gym and eat well, I couldn’t find anything online that inspired me how I needed to be inspired.  I was sick of all the blogs or sites that I found that try to make you believe that you have to be perfect to be fit and healthy.  I wanted to let people who struggle with food and weight loss or weight gain know that you can have a burger and fries or a beer or a slice of pizza and not have to feel guilty about it and that you don’t have to go to the gym 24/7, because I’m living proof of this.  I do all of these things, I’ve just learned that you need to do them in moderation.  Once or twice a week, have a cheat meal if you REALLY need to.  Just know when to stop or say “no thanks” or “I don’t want any” if you know you shouldn’t eat that brownie after a great day of eating well and going to the gym.  I don’t have the perfect body, and I’m OK with that, I just  wanted to inspire people and help them with their weight loss because I know how much help I needed when I did it and I want to show them they’re not alone.

YourInnerSkinny.ca launched on October 7th, 2009 with no expectations.  I honestly just thought that I would have a site that some of my friends would visit when they had nothing to do at work.  It ends up, I was wrong. In the last 6 months I’ve had over 6,100+ views, 3,500+ of those are unique visitors,  and the numbers seem to be growing daily (5,000 of those visits were from January 7-April 6).  I also have 515 followers on Twitter and I get an email a week from complete strangers telling me that I inspire them. That I inspire THEM … … … I never thought in a million years that I’d be inspiring people.  It makes me smile… A great big smile!

This site has become my pet project and has become something that means a lot to me on a very personal level.  Again, something I never thought would happen.  Oddly enough it’s actually inspired me as well.  It’s inspired me to go for my personal training certification; I start my 6 week course on Thursday.  I don’t know if doing personal training is something that I’ll ever do fulltime, but it’s definitely something that I’m passionate about and I believe that the course is worth taking even if I don’t ever use it to train others.

I look forward to what is to come and I look forward to sharing it with all of you.  Thanks for all of your support and keep your stick on the ice!

We had 35 entries in total from Twitter, comments on the site and people posting on their blogs and I was told it would have been more if it wasn’t a prize you had to be in Halifax to claim. I promise you, at some point, I will have a contest that doesn’t involve having to come here to get it.

So, without further ado, the winner of the for a free nutrition assessment is: @RunningLarge. Congratulations!
