Suspect hits police cruiser while fleeing drug bust; Meth, cash and weapons seized

The Valley Integrated Street Crime Enforcement Unit has charged two people with drug offences in Somerset.

On April 20, 2023, as part of an ongoing investigation, the Valley Integrated Street Crime Enforcement Unit executed a search warrant at a home on Brooklyn St. in Somerset. Officers located two people at the home, a man and a woman. Officers attempt to arrest the man, who was inside of a vehicle, but the man attempted to flee and struck a police vehicle damaging it. The man was then removed from the vehicle and guided to the ground where he resisted arrest and attempt to assault one of the arresting officers. After a brief struggle, the man was arrested without injury. The woman was safely arrested a short time later.

During the search, officers located and seized Cocaine, Methamphetamine, Psilocybin, an imitation handgun, a crossbow, cash, scales and packaging.

Ross James Whitney, 34, of Somerset, has been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking (3 counts), Assaulting a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, Operation a Conveyance in a Dangerous Manner, Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized and Failure to Comply with Conditions of a Release Order (4 counts).

Kayla Nicole Keddy, 29, of Cambridge, has been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and Failure to Comply with Conditions of a Release Order (3 counts)

Whitney was remanded into custody and will appear in Kentville Provincial Court on May 18, 2023.

Keddy was released on conditions by the court and will appear in Kentville Provincial Court on June 14, 2023.

The investigation was assisted by the Kings District RCMP General Investigation Section, South Shore Integrated Street Crime Enforcement Unit, Lunenburg District RCMP, the Bridgewater Police Service, the Kentville Police Service and the Criminal Intelligence Service of Nova Scotia.
