Suspicious Package Prompts Amherst Justice Centre to Close Front Office

The front service counter at the Amherst Justice Centre on Church Street was closed today, May 4, after a suspicious package was delivered to the courthouse just after 1 p.m.

Amherst Police are investigating. The package, which originated from Hong Kong, has been seized by police.

All non-essential staff were sent home.

Four court staff were examined at the hospital after experiencing nausea, dizziness and burning to the throat. They were later released.

The front counter area will receive a thorough cleaning tonight and a decision will be made tomorrow on when to reopen to the public.
