The countdown is on as the revitalization of the Dartmouth Sportsplex nears completion.
The extensive multi-million dollar make-over began in May, 2017, and the new features are starting to take shape.
The double gymnasium is in final stages of construction with the floor being installed, the new health and fitness facility is in place, and the new swimming pool features are being installed, including the new waterslide.
However, the work schedule has been impacted by several issues, including the extreme humidity this summer. The humidity caused a delay in the installation of the hardwood floors in the gymnasium, studios, and courts because there was concern laying the floors during that period could cause eventual warping and further expenses and delays in the future.
Based on the updated construction plan, the majority of work is now expected to be done by the end of December.
January will be devoted to the final details, training staff, and ensuring the facility is ready and safe for customers to use. Opportunities to see the new facility will begin at the end of January, with recreational programming getting underway in February.
The $28-million project budget is still on target.
This slight delay will not affect the arena, which opened last month for hockey and ice rentals. The track is also now available for walkers and runners. In addition, the arena will be open for the annual Dartmouth Handcrafters Show at the end of this month.
When fully operational, the revitalized Dartmouth Sportsplex will include the new double gymnasium, new pool attractions – such as a new waterslide, climbing walls, children’s splash pad area, and additional accessibility features – a new fitness centre with three new fitness studios, and new community spaces.
The facility will also feature plenty of glass, with natural light and stunning views throughout.
