Recently I had the absolute pleasure of speaking at Pod Camp about my favorite topic kindness! While I’m dabbling in video lately I decided to share with you a quick little recap video of my presentation.
Studies show that an average adult checks their phone a whopping 110 times a day. That’s every 13 minutes. And for most people this peaks to once every 6 seconds in the evenings.
We check our phones, emails, messages so much there are now apps designed to help you monitor your usage. Break Free (which is where I got those stats above) monitors phone and app usage and tracks just how addicted you are to your phone, and rewards you with badges when you’ve successfully taken a break (if you actually manage to be able to do it).
The fact of the matter is whether we want to admit it or not, we are living our lives online more than we realize. Meaning we need to be mindful of our behaviors and the community were are creating and cultivating online.
Whether you’re a blogger or not we share more about our lives now than we ever have culturally before. Whether it’s what we had for breakfast, or what we’re wearing today we share A LOT! And because we are sharing so much this makes us much more vulnerable, as we are inviting people into our lives (and their opinions) good and bad.
This becomes problematic when people voice their opinions, and you are alone in consuming them. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the drama, or thinking the grass is always greener or sent down a self-loathing hate spiral. It’s important to remember that just because it’s online doesn’t make it hurt any less. Let’s work together to spread positivity, say no to the drama, and lead by example!
I’m so happy to have been a part of Pod Camp 2017, and I’m definitely looking forward to doing it all again next year. It’s such an inspiring event, and I was so motivated by everyone who shared their personal experiences and skills. What an incredibly talented group we have here in Halifax. On that note, if you have any topic suggestions or stories you’d like to share PLEASE comment below or reach out to me via social media @shortpresents.
