TSX Visits Nova Scotia, Young Person will Open Market

For the first time, Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) will open the trading day from Nova Scotia. Canada’s leading stock exchange will hold a market open ceremony live from Halifax on Wednesday, May 11.

Government will hold a contest on Twitter beginning today, May 4, to select a young Nova Scotian to officially start the trading day.

“There’s a new culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in Nova Scotia,” said Premier Stephen McNeil. “Our students and young entrepreneurs are turning ideas into innovative businesses that are competing and succeeding around the world. They will drive our economy forward and they deserve this recognition.”

To enter, use the hashtag #TSXigniteNS and tweet @nsgov what makes Nova Scotia a great place to start a business. The person with the best answer using words, photos, GIFs or video will open TSX.

The visit coincides with the TSX Ignite live event on May 10. The program helps entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized companies by sharing insight from some of Canada’s leading industry experts and advisors on how to build and grow great companies.

“TSX is thrilled to host its first market open ceremony in Halifax, joined by Premier McNeil and a young Nova Scotian as we celebrate entrepreneurialism in Nova Scotia,” said Nick Thadaney, president and CEO, Global Equity Capital Markets, TMX Group. “Through our TSX Ignite program, we are delighted to connect with innovative entrepreneurs across Canada to help them scale up and grow into the newest and next wave of exciting Canadian companies.”

The market open ceremony will be hosted by Nova Scotia Community College at the Waterfront Campus, at 80 Mawiomi Pl., Dartmouth. The Twitter contest will continue until Monday, May 9.
