Update: RCMP investigate train derailment, Pictou County, N.S.

Pictou County District RCMP are currently on the scene of a train derailment in Lansdowne. At 1:57 p.m., RCMP received a call that a train had left the tracks near the Intersection of Lansdowne and Montreal Roads in Lansdowne, Pictou County.

At 1:57 p.m., RCMP received a call that a train had left the tracks near the Intersection of Lansdowne and Montreal Roads in Lansdowne, Pictou County.

The train was travelling from Stellarton to Truro at the time. RCMP, EMO, New Glasgow Fire Department HAZMAT and officials from the Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway responded to the derailment and remain scene at this time. Two people were on board the train and there are no reports of any injuries. Six containers left the tracks which contained a butane/propane mix, commonly referred to as Liquid Odourless Propane. Due to the hazardous nature of the cargo, residents within a two kilometre radius of the scene have been evacuated from their homes. They are asked to attend the West River Fire Hall to Register with officials on site there.

Emergency and cleanup crews are en route to the scene at this time. They are expected to arrive late evening and work throughout the night and into tomorrow.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
