Weekend Wrap-up: July 27-28, 2013

1. It’s the Pride Parade! Each year the collective creativity, talents, and energy of our Halifax communities come together to wow the world, all while celebrating the diversity and variety of life here in the HRM!

2.

It’s the Africa Festival of Arts and Culture! This annual three-day free festival showcases the cultural heritage of people of African descent living in Nova Scotia. The cultures of many African and Caribbean countries are represented through literature, cuisine and craftwork and, of course, through music, drumming, song and dance – all in styles ranging through jazz, blues, soul, gospel and hip hop.

3. Been to the Public Gardens for a concert yet this summer? Every Sunday between June 16th and September 8th, the Public Gardens will host its annual Summer Concert Series. All concerts will take place at the Bandstand from 2-4pm. Stop by and enjoy the flowers, the music, and perhaps even some dancing or an ice cream. This weekend is John Alphonse & The Waterfront Stompers Dixieland Band!

4. It’s the Lunenburg Wooden Boat Reunion! Come celebrate and enjoy wooden boats in historic Lunenburg all weekend long. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the port of Lunenburg is steeped in history and full of wonderful restaurants, inns, shops and fine establishments where sailors can quench their thirst. Two days of special events will take place along the waterfront, hosted by the fantastic Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic. This is the third year for this event and all wooden boats are welcome: sailboats, motorboats, punts, canoes, kayaks, pleasure or commercial craft.

5. Fun Pride family events! On Saturday, Halifax Pride will offer an area at our festival site specifically geared towards kids! With lots of games, activities and surprises, we welcome little ones and their families to come share this day and celebrate together!
On Sunday, head to the family picnic and play! Pack a picnic and enjoy a hilarious new musical version of the Snow White fairy tale! Fun for the whole family and full of catchy tunes, performed in historic Cambridge Battery at Point Pleasant Park. Picnic starts at 11:00 and the play at 1:00.
