At 5:28 p.m. on October 27, a deer hunter who was in the Middleboro area heard a popping sound, and when he looked in the direction of the noise, he saw a man pointing a handgun, firing several shots at him. He did not realize that he was actually on private land at the time the shots were fired at him.
The shooter got into a truck then drove away. The hunter, who was not injured, called 911 and provided a description of the truck to police.
Middleboro is a small rural community located Southeast of Pugwash. Police responded immediately and several police officers provided containment around the residence. Contact was made with the suspect by phone. He walked out of his home and was arrested without incident. The home was then searched by police. Firearms were found, including a shotgun, a rifle, a pistol and a carbine, and ammunition. Some of the firearms were not properly stored and as a result all firearms were seized from the residence.
The suspect was taken to Pugwash Detachment where he was later released on conditions. The 52-year-old man from Wallace is facing the following charges as a result of this incident:
- Discharging a Firearm While Being Reckless
- Careless Use of a Firearm (4 counts)
- Pointing a Firearm
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
- Carrying a Concealed Weapon
- Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle
He is scheduled to appear in Amherst Provincial Court on December 17.
The investigation is ongoing.
