Automated license plate recognition cameras coming to HRM

The Halifax Regional Municipality is launching a Mobile Licence Plate Recognition program to enhance parking enforcement by introducing new technology and compliance vehicles with cameras mounted on them.

Licence plate recognition automates the process of identifying and verifying licence plates, reducing time-consuming manual checks and increasing efficiencies.

The cameras will capture images of parked vehicles and licence plates, which will then be scanned to determine if the vehicle is in compliance. If the vehicle is not in compliance, a compliance officer is alerted to the vehicle’s location.

All information collected through the licence plate recognition is encrypted to protect privacy. No other information is collected and the process for obtaining personal information to issue a ticket continues to be the same.

The municipality has begun testing and training, with the full program to be launched in June.
