Community: A Chang Is Gonna Come

Last night marked the return of NBC’s Thursday night comedy lineup, and although I only watch two of the shows, I was incredibly excited. I only started watching Community recently, but it didn’t take long for me to become addicted. It’s easily one of the funniest shows on television right now.

After marathon-ing my way through one and a half seasons, last night’s returning episode did not disappoint. The whole gang was back from the holidays with new stories to share. Annie had fallen for Rich (remember the perfect doctor from pottery class?) while dredging the ocean (or lake, or whatever) for garbage and human fingers. Shirley had reconnected with her ex-husband because she’s pregnant with his baby (or so she thought) and everyone else…well, they were pretty much the same.

Since I’m not a big Britta fan (she’s funny and I’m glad she’s a character on the show, she’s just not very likable) I have always been on Team Jeff & Annie. Not that I want them to date, necessarily, but I like their flirtatious chemistry. So it was fun to see him get kind of jealous about Annie having eyes for Rich, only to see that actually turn into jealousy for Rich and his perfection.

The highlight of the episode was Malcom Jamal Warner’s appearance as Andre, Shirley’s ex. The combination of a Cosby sweater and a shout-out (In case you missed it, he said “Thanks, my dad gave it to me” when Jeff complimented him on it) was like television heaven.

The episode also saw the gang choose a new study group member – it was between Chang and Rich, and Jeff used his magical persuasion to convince the gang to let in Chang. Ugh. I’ve never been a Chang fan, so I was even less impressed when Pierce let it slip that Shirley was probably pregnant with Chang’s baby, not Andre’s.

One of the best things about Community is that it’s the kind of show that has so many jokes it deserves to be watched twice. That also makes it hard to list all the funny moments and quotes in a blog post. So here’s a sampling:

  • Troy: “Is it black Michael Chiklis?”
    Annie: “No!”
Pierce: “Is it white George Foreman?”
Britta: “You guys are talking about the same person. He’s biracial, his name is David and he’s a human being.”
  • Jeff: “How old is he again?”
Annie: “Thirty-something, I guess. He has a land-line and uses the word album.”
  • Jeff saying that Rich has “a PhD in Bein’ Swell and a Masters in Everybody Loves Me.”
  • “You ever go into the bathroom and find parsley in your teeth that your friends hadn’t told you about? Now imagine your teeth are a uterus and that parsley is a half-Chinese baby.” – Pierce, actually making a decent argument.
  • Annie’s spread of Tropical Skittles, cigarettes and mouthwash at the mixer.
  • Abed pretending to malfunction in order to get out of an awkward conversation.
  • Troy trying to subtly figure out if Shirley and Andre had sex near Halloween.
  • “Oh I’m serious, baby. I am Yahoo Serious. I’m Serious FM. Welcome to the world serious of seriousness sponsored by Honey Nut Seerioes.” – Jeff
  • Britta flashing a kid for concert tickets and then yelling “MEZZANINE?!”
  • Abed: “We really should start learning people’s names.”
Jeff: “I agree with brown Jamie Lee Curtis.”
  • Rich enjoying his appearance (with kettlecorn!) on Troy and Abed in the Morning. (For reals, I would watch that show.)
