Consumer Protection Legislation to be Consistent and Flexible

Consumer protection legislation is being updated to reflect current practices and to make it more flexible to changes in the consumer environment.

Service Nova Scotia Minister Mark Furey introduced amendments today, Oct. 1, creating separate registrar and deputy registrar authorities under each act, appointing the person by ministerial order. The amendments do not provide additional authorities or powers, but they ensure a consistent approach.

The legislation affected includes the: Consumer Services Act, Consumer Protection Act, Consumer Reporting Act, Cemetery and Funeral Services Act, Direct Sellers’ Regulation Act, Embalmers and Funeral Directors Act, Mortgage Brokers Act and Mortgage Regulation Act.

The changes reflect current practice and legislation in most other provinces.
