Tuesday, March 17, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that due to the severe weather forecast for overnight tonight and tomorrow, all municipal offices and contact centres in the Halifax region will be delaying opening until 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18.
Environment Canada has a winter storm warning in effect for Halifax Metro and Halifax County West. This system will bring snow, strong winds and blowing snow to much of the Maritimes, with some areas forecast to receive up to 35 centimetres by Wednesday evening.
Safety is the municipality’s top priority. Delaying opening will facilitate clearing efforts by crews and ensure a safer commute for our employees and residents.
Tonight a decision was also made to temporarily suspend Halifax Transit bus and ferry services, including Access-A-Bus, on Wednesday, March 18. Staff will monitor the weather and road conditions and provide an update on service at 10 a.m. At that time, it will be determined if service will be cancelled for the rest of the day or reinstated at a later hour.
Curbside collection of garbage, organics, and recyclables is cancelled for tomorrow, and will be re-scheduled for this Saturday, March 21. The weather is expected to affect many municipal recreation programs and facilities, including rinks and pools. Residents should call ahead to the facility to confirm before heading out. In the event of widespread cancellations or closures, the municipality will issue a Public Service Announcement and provide updates on Twitter via @hfxgov and online at www.halifax.ca/snow.
