My CrossFit Experiences

My CrossFit Experiences

During my weight loss journey I had done CrossFit intermittently on my own for about 5 or 6 years, checking out what the WOD was on the CrossFit site and trying to do it at my “GloboGym”.  About 8 months ago, I wanted to take my training to what I thought was the next level so I added more functional and sports related training into my routine.  After seeing some great results, I realized that CrossFit was the way that I wanted my training to go and I’ve been doing it fulltime on my own ever since.

With all of the above said, I haven’t spent much time in a CrossFit Box and I’m 100% self-taught in all of the Olympic Lifts and in all of the other functional movements used on a regular basis. There isn’t a CrossFit Box in my town to train at and the other two guys I train with are self-taught too.

My CrossFit Experiences

At my gym we are based on functional movement workouts and exercises and a lot of what we do is geared around the same principles as CrossFit, but since I’m the most experienced in these movements in my gym, it’s hard for me to learn.  This is why I decided to travel 2,500km to Vancouver last weekend and take the CrossFit Level 1 Trainer’s course.

Deciding to take my Level 1 Trainer’s course was one of the greatest decisions I’ve made in my career! Wow, what a freakin’ awesome experience! Besides all of the amazing people I met, I learned more in 15 minutes than I could in 5 hours of reading online, or watching YouTube and working out on my own, recording my workouts, analyzing my form and teaching myself.

Being in and around the CrossFit community and getting to train with other CrossFitters was a great experience. It made me realize that I needed to be around more people like this so I can continue to learn all the time.  With the people I met and the connections I made, I’m hoping to be able to travel a bit and visit some CrossFit Boxes and get some more experience under my belt so I can become a better trainer, which is what I strive to be.

The best part of last weekend’s experience is that I found out on Friday at midnight that I passed my exam and I am now officially a CrossFit Level 1 (CF-L1) Trainer!  WOOOOOO HOOOOO!  And even though I’m 100% self-taught and even though I have the worst case of text anxiety I have every seen, I was able to prove to myself that what I’m doing is right and that this is what I want to continue to do.
