Nashville – The Duet

Juliette & her Mr.? For some reason, my DVR didn’t record Nashville last week, so I had to play catchup this week. I still really enjoy this show, as a soapy drama with great music. I liked last week’s episode, which finally forced Rayna and Juliette together. By creating an image crisis for Juliette and giving Rayna an album she’s desperate to make, the stakes were raised enough that seeing them on stage together was a big moment. This Wednesday’s episode was the last for 2012, and at lot of plot lines came to a boiling point. Scarlett and Gunnar finally kissed, and Scarlett’s career is on the rise. Rayna and Teddy’s relationship issues and the election intensified, too. The photos of Teddy and Peggy that went public weren’t too scandalous, but Peggy’s suicide attempt convinced Rayna that there was more to the story than just a hug between friends. Instead, Teddy told the truth about his financial crimes. Juliette’s story was more unexpected. She put a lot of effort into impressing her football playin’, Jesus lovin’ boyfriend’s family, but of course the mother gave Juliette a private “you’re not good enough for this family” talk – it reminded me of the episode of Gilmore Girls where Rory goes for dinner at Logan’s family’s house. It was a bit predictable, but I think this relationship has given Juliette’s character more depth. I’m glad they didn’t keep her involved with Deacon. I like his connection to her mother, and the scene where he delivered the letter to her was one of the best in this episode. The success of Rayna and Juliette’s duet led to a tour offer from the label – the two of them co-headlining an arena tour, alternating on who closes the show. I figured this would happen, and I think it’ll make for an even stronger second half to the season. But the bigger question closing out the show was Juliette’s marriage proposal – she’s a desperate, lonely girl. It’s an impulsive move, but one that I think is believable for her character. ...
