Premier Reflects on 99th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge

Premier Stephen McNeil, Minister responsible for Military Relations, honoured the brave Canadians who fought for our freedom on the 99th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, today, April 9.

“Nova Scotia joins with the Canadian Armed Forces in marking the 99th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge,” said Premier Stephen McNeil. “Canada came of age during the First World War and many regard the Battle of Vimy Ridge as the moment that Canada was truly born.”

The Battle of Vimy Ridge saw four Canadian divisions fight together as a unified fighting force for the first time. While Canada suffered heavy casualties during the battle, the victory over German forces is regarded as a turning point in Canadian military history.

“We honour the service and sacrifice of those who fought so bravely and heroically for the freedoms that we enjoy today,” said Premier McNeil. “Canadians will never forget the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for Canada. We are thankful to those brave soldiers today and every day.”

Commemorative events marking the 99th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge will take place at various locations across the country and in Vimy, France.
