RCMP on scene of small protest, Pictou Landing, N.S.

RCMP are on scene of a small protest in Pictou Landing.

Pictou County District RCMP are currently monitoring a small gathering of people on Pictou Landing Road near the site where a pipe broke earlier today at the pulp and paper mill.

As a result of this morning’s pipe burst at the pulp and paper mill, some Pictou Landing residents started a small blockade of the work access road leading to the site of the Northern Pulp and Paper pipeline breakage repair site. The pipeline carries all the water, chemicals and waste material from their pulp paper process. This residue is carried by a pipeline to the water treatment plant located on the Pictou Landing reserve where it is processed and cleaned before it is piped back into the ocean. The Mill went into immediate shut down and the pipe line was shut off to prevent any further leakage. Repairs are ongoing.

At this time, the main road is not blocked, and there are no public safety concerns.
