With Spring only weeks away, all-terrain vehicle enthusiasts are beginning to head out on trails across Nova Scotia. The RCMP would like to remind ATV enthusiasts of a few simple tips to make every ride an enjoyable one.

•Always check the weather conditions before you leave
•Always travel with a friend and set a meeting time and place in case you get separated
•Let someone know your plans, where you are going, the route you plan on taking and the time of your expected return
•Always wear protective clothing, including a helmet, gloves and eye protection. Wear layers of clothing to keep warm and dry
•Bring a backpack with safety tools. These can include helpful gadgets such as a shovel, rope, a compass, a fire starting kit, a first aid kit, and a cell phone for emergencies.
•Ride at a reasonable rate of speed. Know your riding partner’s driving limitations, as well as your own, and operate only at a speed that allows you to remain in total control of your ATV
•Ride sober. Drinking and operating an ATV do not mix. Don’t drink and drive and don’t tolerate others who do
•Always be alert. You don’t always know what is coming at you; be ready to react to any situation you may encounter
