Serious injuries result from suspected impaired driving collision

On May 25 at 2:21 a.m., Cumberland District RCMP responded to a single vehicle collision on Southampton Rd. in West Amherst. The RCMP was assisted by members of Amherst Police Department. Police arrived on scene and located two injured men on the road, and a severely damaged vehicle on its side. Police determined the car lost control and struck a culvert.​ The driver was showing signs of impairment by alcohol. Paramedics attended to the two men, and police officers and an RCMP Police Dog searched the area for​ additional passengers but did not locate anyone else.

Both the driver and the passenger sustained serious injuries and were transported to Cumberland Regional Healthcare Centre for treatment. The passenger was transported by LifeFlight to Halifax for further medical treatment. An RCMP Collision Analyst was called to examine the scene, and as a result, Southampton Rd. was closed for several hours and traffic was re-routed. The road was re-opened to traffic at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Cumberland District RCMP is continuing its investigation into this incident.
