Friday, July 24, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting citizens and tourists to participate in an insightful 90-minute guided walk through the human and natural history of north end Halifax.

On Sunday, July 26 (rain or shine) beginning at 4:30 p.m. urban forest experts will lead a walking tour around the streets of the north end to talk about the value of trees to our city.

This is the first of three urban forest walkabouts planned for the summer through a partnership between the municipality and Dalhousie University.

This weekend’s walk through the Hydrostone district and north end will be led by municipal urban forester John Simmons and municipal planner John Charles.

Discussions during the tour will touch on important historical events such as the Halifax Explosion and how trees were an essential component in the rebirth of that neighbourhood. The tour will also take participants past some of the newest developments in the north end, and how the tree canopy is co-existing with the new growth of residential and commercial buildings.

Participants are asked to meet in the park in front of the Hydrostone Market on Young and Kaye streets. While the tour will have some structure to it, there’s no obligation for tour participants to remain on the tour for the entire 90 minutes.

Two more urban walkabouts are planned for next month, one in Dartmouth and the other on the Dalhousie University campus.
