Weekend Weather Not Expected to Affect Municipal Services

Friday, Jan. 15, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – The mixed bag of weather forecasted for the Halifax region is not expected to affect municipal services on Saturday, Jan. 16.

Current forecasts are calling for flurries to begin at about noon, changing over to rain or freezing rain in the afternoon. Any change in the track of this weather system will have an impact on the type and amount of precipitation the Halifax region may receive. Right now total accumulation is expected to be between 10 and 15 millimetres of rain or freezing rain.

Crews were out today salting and applying brine in anticipation of tomorrow’s weather. The Winter Operations team will continue to monitor the latest forecasts and dispatch crews accordingly tomorrow.

Residents are encouraged to adjust their travel accordingly and be aware of rapidly changing weather and road conditions. Residents should also be prepared for challenges associated with bad weather, like power outages that can come with freezing rain.

Those who had their garbage, recyclables and organics collection cancelled this past Wednesday should put their waste at the curb before 7 a.m. Saturday, as collection will go ahead as scheduled.

The advance polling stations for the special election in District 6 (Harbourview-Burnside-Dartmouth East) will be open noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, regardless of the weather. Crews will work to ensure the parking lots at the polls, as well as the sidewalks and bus stops in the immediate vicinity are cleared in a timely manner.

Halifax Recreation is not anticipating any impact on programs or services Saturday morning. Once the bad weather starts, residents are encouraged to phone their respective facility for further updates on closures, cancellations or delays.

Halifax Transit staff will be assessing the weather and road conditions throughout the day and evening. Updates on individual bus routes will be available by following @hfxtransit on Twitter, which is also streamed online at www.halifax.ca/snow.
